ひとつの戦争が終わり、人魚はみな死んだ。勝者たるいるかたちは、海底にメガロポリスを築き上げた

A war ended with all the merfolk dead. The victorious dolphins built a megalopolis on the ocean floor.

やがて、いるかたちは版図の拡大を目的として陸上にまで進出してきた
-
In time, the dolphins expanded their dominion and advanced onto land.

いるかたちはくろがねの武器を携え、持ち前の金剛のようなうろこで武装していた
-
They carried iron weapons and were armed with their own adamantine scales.

ようやく火の扱いを覚えたばかりの人間が、統制された重装歩兵たるいるかに敵うはずもなかった
-
Mankind, who had only just mastered fire, could not defend against the infantry of the dolphins.

人魚たちと同様、いるかなりの敵への敬意として人間の大半は殺された
-
As with the merfolk, most humans were slain as a gesture of respect toward a worthy enemy.

少数の人間が、慣れない陸上生活を補助させる目的でどれいとして生かされた

The few remaining were spared as slaves to assist with the unfamiliar life on land.

キュイプロスもまた、いるかに占領された土地のひとつだった

Squeeden was one of the lands conquered by the dolphins.

永遠を想起させる途方もない砂漠と、対岸の見えないほどの大河に挟まれた、巨大な都市国家

A vast city-state between an endless desert and a river so great that one could not see the other bank.

人間のどれい（いるかのどれいはいないから、すこし妙な表現だ）が最も多い都市でもあった

It was the home to the majority of the humans that remained as slaves.

キュイプロスのどれいに、ペネタと呼ばれる女がいた
-
Among the slaves of Squeeden was a woman named Peneta.

かつて、ペネタは高位の司祭だった。いまでは朝から夜までいるかのうろこ磨きをしている
-
Peneta had once been a high priestess. Now she spent her days brushing dolphin scales.

うろこ磨きはキュイプロスのどれいに固有の仕事だ
-
Scale brushing was a job unique to Squeeden slaves.

キュイプロスを吹き抜ける川風は砂を巻き上げ、いるか市民のうろこの隙間を砂で埋め尽くす
-
The river winds that blew through Squeeden stirred up the sand, dirtying the scales of the dolphins.

そのまま水を浴びると、水を吸った砂はうろこの隙間へ入りこんで皮膚にへばりつき、炎症を引き起こす
-
If they got wet, sand would seep into the gaps between the scales, sticking to the skin and causing inflammation.

ゆえに、沐浴場を訪れるいるかは、どれいにうろこを磨かせ、砂を落としてからつめたい水に浸かるのだ
-
Therefore, when a dolphin visited the baths, it had a servant clean its scales to remove the sand before bathing.

このときばかりは、人間の細くしなやかな手が役に立つ
-
At such times, the humans' slender and flexible hands proved to be useful.

うろこ磨きは、どれいがいるかに直接触れることが許された数少ない仕事だった
-
During a brushing was the only time that humans were allowed to touch the dolphins directly.

ペネタはその日も沐浴場で、何百ものいるかを相手にうろこを磨いた
-
That day, Peneta was working in the baths, brushing the scales of countless dolphins.

最後のいるかの相手を終えると、ペネタはいるかのいなくなった沐浴場で汗まみれの身体を洗った
-
After finishing up with the last dolphin, Peneta washed herself in the empty bath.

それも終わると沐浴場の掃除をはじめた。つらい仕事だが、ひとりになれる貴重な時間だった
-
Finally, she began cleaning the bath area. It was a difficult task, but provided precious solitude.

水を抜いて浴槽を拭いていると、足先になにか硬くつめたいものが触れた
-
As she drained and wiped down the bath, she felt a cool, hard object under her foot.

手のひらほどの大きさの、きらきらひかる五角形。剥がれ落ちたいるかのうろこだった
-
A glittering pentagon, the size of her palm: a shedded dolphin scale.

ペネタはうろこを拾い上げると、とっさに服の裏側へ隠した。周囲にはだれもいなかった
-
Making sure no one was around, Peneta picked up the scale and hid it underneath her clothes.

月下、ペネタはどれいの居住区へと帰った。門番のいるかも彼女を気に留めなかった
-
By moonlight, Peneta returned to the slaves' quarters. The gatekeeper paid her no heed.

どれいたちが眠る部屋を音を立てないように歩き、部屋の隅、小さな葦の敷物に横になった
-
She stepped quietly past the sleeping slaves and laid down on a small reed mat in the corner.

そっと胸元からうろこを取り出した。月に透かすと、貝の内側のような薄い虹色の模様が浮かんだ
-
She gently pulled out the scale. When she held it up to the moon, it shone with an iridescent light.

翌日、仕事が終わり部屋に戻ると、ペネタは敷物の裏に隠したうろこを取り出した
-
The next day, Peneta returned to her room and retrived the scale from under the mat.

それから、帰り道にごみ捨て場で拾った鉄片でこつこつとうろこを削り始めた
-
Every day after work, she began to carve the scale with a discarded piece of iron she found.

なにか目的があったわけではないが、それはペネタの習慣になった
-
She didn't have a particular reason to do it, but it helped to pass the time.

眠る前のささやかな作業が積み重なり、うろこからは美しい流線型が掘り出された
-
As the days passed, Peneta continued to hone its form.

流線型の片側の先端をさらに削ると、どうやらいるかのように見えなくもない
-
She started to carve details into the scale.

それで、目と尾びれとくちばしを掘った。これでペネタの手元には、小さないるかがいる
-
She carved out eyes, a tail and a beak. When finished, Peneta held a miniature dolphin in her hands.

ああ、なんだかおかしくてたまらない。部屋の隅で、ペネタはずいぶん久しぶりに笑った
-
How ironic! In the corner of the room, Peneta laughed for the first time in many years.

ペネタはいるかの彫刻をこっそり持ち歩くようになった。お守りのようなものだ
-
Peneta started carrying around the minature dolphin in secret, similar to how one would carry a talisman. 

そしてときどき、沐浴場で剥がれたうろこを見つけると持ち帰り、時間をかけて作品を仕上げた
-
Whenever she found another scale in the bath, she would bring it home and carve another figure.

「これは、どうやら私たちのうろこと同じ材質のようだね。君が作ったのか？」
-
"That seem to be made of the same material as our scales. Did you make it?"

気を抜いていた。ペネタはうろこ磨きの最中、いるかの彫刻をいるかの目の前で落とした
-
Carelessly, Peneta had dropped the figure right in front of the dolphin she had been cleaning.

これは、なんの罪にあたるのだろう。わたしは殺されるのだろうか。どれいの命は安い
-
She feared for her life. Was this a crime? Would she be killed? A slave's life was a cheap one.

どうにか誤魔化すことはできないだろうか。しかしこれは、どうしてもわたしが作ったものだ
-
Was there any way to deny it? No, it was clearly something she had made.

「わたしが作りました。浴槽に落ちていたうろこを削って作りました」
-
"I did. I carved it out of a dolphin scale I found in the baths."

結局、ペネタはその場しのぎでも嘘をつかなかった。いるかはペネタと彫刻を交互に眺めた
-
Peneta was too scared to even lie. The dolphin looked back and forth between her and the carving.

「ふうん、なかなかキュイキュイだ。君、私のためにも同じものを作りたまえよ」
-
"Hmm, not bad. Pretty squweet. You will make one for me."

いるかはばりりと自分のうろこを一枚剥がし、ペネタに手渡した
-
The dolphin peeled off one of its own scales and handed to her.

ペネタはできるかぎり急いでその仕事をこなした。そのいるかは、仲間に彫刻を自慢して回った
-
Peneta carved as fast as she could. After it was finished, the dolphin showed it off to all its friends.

やがてペネタのもとには、いるかからのうろこ彫刻の依頼が舞い込むようになった
-
Soon, Peneta recieved more requests for carved figures.

ペネタはうろこを削り続けた。いつしか、うろこ磨きは別のどれいが担当するようになった
-
She continued to carve scales each day, and eventually another slave took over her bathhouse tasks.

ペネタの知らないところで、うろこを加工することがいるかたちの流行になった
-
Unbeknownst to Peneta, her dolphin scale carvings became a trend among the dolphins.

いまでは、うろこの装飾品や家具を持っていることが一種のステータスとなった
-
Owning scale ornaments or furniture had become a status symbol.

多くのどれいや、いるかまでもがうろこの加工に駆り出された。ペネタはうろこを削り続けた
-
Many slaves and even some dolphins themselves were pressed into scale-working. Peneta carved on.

キュイプロスでは、巨大なうろこいるか像を建てるため、うろこの徴収が始まった

In Squeeden, scales were collected to construct a colossal statue of a dolphin.

とうとう、うろこが足りなくなった。うろこがなければ奪えばいい
-
The supply of scales began to dwindle. When they became scarce, the dolphins began taking them by force.

世界各地でいるか同士の戦争が起きた。いるかもどれいもよく死んだ。ペネタはうろこを削り続けた
-
Wars broke out among the dolphins across the world. Dolphins and slaves alike died. Peneta carved on.

ペネタのもとにうろこが届かなくなった。残ったうろこを仕上げると、久しぶりにやることがなくなった
-
Finally, no more scales arrived to Peneta. Soon, she would have nothing to do for the first time in years.

「君、まだここにいるのか」いつしかのいるかが作業場までやってきた。うろこはわずかに残っている
-
“You, you’re still here?” It was that dolphin from before, visiting her workshop. A few scales remained.

「うろこなんて削ってる場合じゃないぞ。ここもじきに戦場になる。逃げるんだ」
-
"Now is not the time to be carving. This place will soon be a battlefield. Run while you can."

「どこへですか？」「知らないね。でも人間ならうろこ目当てで襲われることはないだろう」
-
"Where to?" asked Peneta. "No idea, but at least you humans won't be hunted down for scales," it replied.

「あなたは？」「いるかはもうどこへ行ったって同じだね」 
-
"And as for you?" The dolphin sighed. "As a dolphin, it's the same wherever I go now."

ペネタは川沿いに下流へ逃げた。やがて、ペネタと似たような境遇の人間の集団と合流した
-
Peneta fled downstream along the river, eventually joining a band of humans in a similar plight.

噂によると、いるか同士で疲弊しているこの機に乗じて、人間のレジスタンスが攻勢に出たらしい
-
Rumor had it that, seizing upon the dolphins' exhaustion, human resistance forces were now striking back.

長い旅の果て、海辺の小さな村にたどり着いた。いるかはいなかった
-
After a long journey, they arrived at a small village by the sea, devoid of any dolphins.

ペネタたちは村で暮らすようになった。ペネタは漁師となった
-
The humans began living in the village. Peneta became a fisherwoman.

ある日の漁の終わり、水面からうろこのないいるかが顔を出した。「どうも。すこしよろしいですか」
-
One day after fishing, a scaleless dolphin surfaced from the water. "Hello. May I have a word?"

「いるかの国はすべて崩壊しました。いるかはもう戦う気はないと、どうか人々に伝えてください」
-
"All of the dolphin nations have collapsed. Can you inform your people that we no longer wish to fight?"

「わかりました」「キュイキュイ。きっと約束ですよ」いるかはのろのろと遠くへ泳いでいった
-
"I will," replied Peneta. "Please," the dolphin sqeaked, then slowly swam off into the distance.

Since the Scale War, even to this day,
no dolphin with scales has ever been sighted.

The Legend of the Scale, said to be based on Peneta's experience,
remains in the lore of all Squeea, though with variations in each region.

The prevailing theory is that dolphins lost
their scales because individuals burdened with heavy armor
that hindered life underwater were naturally weeded out.
